Scubility Advanced Diver Development Program (Specialty)

Scubility is the ability to Scuba dive with a disability.

The SDI Scubility Diver Program is designed to give physically disabled divers the necessary skills and techniques used to conduct open water dives in conditions similar to their training without the direct supervision of a SDI Scubility Instructor. However, some SDI Scubility divers require supervision of a qualified SDI Dive Buddy.

The SDI Scubility Diver Program takes a closer look at the techniques and equipment adjustments to meet a disabled divers needs allowing individuals to dive with safe diving practices.

The SDI Advanced Diver Development Program was created to make true advanced divers. Under the old way of training a student could take an advanced course immediately following an open water course, and only have a total of 9 dives, all under the direct training of an instructor. The SDI Advanced Diver Development program requires a new open water student to complete 4 SDI Specialties or equivalent, combined with 25 logged dives. SDI feels a diver will truly be advanced after this is accomplished. The SDI Scubility program requirements are the same as the standard SDI Advanced Diver Development program.

Most of these courses are covered by grants. Request more info below to fill out an application to determine if you qualify for one of these programs either through the VA or Lifewaters.org.

How does a typical open water course go?

All Scubility courses begin with Scuba Discovery. This is a low key pool experience for you and us to determine the candidates abilities and the level of support required for class.

Academic study can be done either online or verbally by an instructor.

A pool day to introduce and practice the skills necessary to safely navigate the underwater environment

One or two open water days to practice skills learned in the pool. In all cases we will try to make sure candidate has "walk-in" as well as boat diving experience.

Certification and designation as a DB1, DB2, or DB3 depending on the level of support required.

Experience: dive – dive – dive. There are many opportunities throughout the year to scuba dive either locally or on specialized trips. We have through lifewaters been able to take candidates to the Georgia aquarium, Florida, and Cozumel. We have trained extensively for the opportunity to serve you in this way. It is our hope and desire that we can have you exploring the underwater world with us soon.
